Family Garden Guide

This guide captures what we're learning from every plant we grow here at The Compound. I'm documenting our care routines, timing for our Central Texas climate, and honest notes about what's working and what isn't.

This isn't stuff you'll find in gardening books. It's what actually works in our specific soil with our weather patterns. Each plant gets its own section where I can add new discoveries, family photos, and notes about how we like to cook and preserve what we harvest.

I'm building this so you don't have to make the same mistakes I did. Some plants have blown me away with how well they've done. Others cost me time and money before I figured out they weren't right for this spot. Everything goes in here as I learn it, with enough detail that you can pick up where I left off.

Foundational Elements

SOIL & INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS

pH Management by Garden Zone

  • Vegetable Beds: 6.0-7.0 (neutral zone for maximum crop flexibility)

  • Berry Collection: 4.5-6.5 (acidic requirements for blueberries)

  • Herb Garden: 6.0-8.0 (alkaline tolerance for Mediterranean herbs)

  • Fruit Trees: 6.0-7.0 (balanced nutrition for long-term production)

Permanent Support Infrastructure

Grape Trellis System

  • Structure: T-post and wire system, 6-8 feet spacing

  • Pruning: Four-arm Kniffin or cordon system

  • Annual Management: Remove 80-90% of previous year's growth in January-February

Berry Support Systems

  • Blackberry Trellises: Sturdy T-posts and wire for thornless varieties

  • Blueberry Spacing: 4-6 feet apart, 8-10 feet between rows

Strawberry Beds: Raised beds with 12-18 inch plant spacing
